Ugandan children's choir heading for Gautier in March

The Harvest Worship Center is making plans to host the Watoto Children's Choir from Uganda on March 16 at the Gautier Convention Center.

Watoto means the children in Swahili. The choirs have been touring since 1994 as a fund-raising effort for their orphanage.

The child care center, founded in 1992, grew out of an English-speaking church established in 1983 by Canadian missionaries. There are approximately 2 million orphaned children in Uganda as a result of civil war and AIDS.

Two choirs, each comprising 24 children ages 10 to 13, tour the U.S., Canada, England and Australia.

The 1½-hour performance is a soulful blend of African rhythms, contemporary and gospel music and ethnic dances. The children wear colorful, traditional Uganda clothing.
